Make Better Backpackers

(Ultra)Runners do make better backpackers... well... so do swimmers, sailors, deck-builders and soccer players! It's all about cross training... working different muscle groups in a variety of activity make for a better backpacker.

Five years ago (post-cardiac stent; 10/03), "g" entered the world of running at the very youthful age of 50. At first there were training schedules to learn... finding the right running shoe... and zillions of web sites filled with cool clothing and gear to buy! Endurance, speed and strength building became his mantra for that first year off the treadmill in 2004.

Then a change occurred. With his ASICS smoldering at the finish line of his first half marathon (9/04), "g" set his sights on running his first marathon in 2005... and of course... another shift in his training paradigm occurred. Instead of strong-and-fast (well... sort-of-strong and not-really-fast), he now jogged to the tune of slow(er)-and-steady.

So... the pitter-patter of long-distance jogging momentum took hold of "g". By December '04 he had embarked on a massive mission to achieve new running feets. While visiting family in D.C. on New Year's weekend, "g" became enamored with the moment... and... while standing in front of Iwa Jima, he and his sister-in-law (AKA: Margarita Jeannie) decided: We're doin' the Marine Corps in '05! (The madness had begun.)

The links below are organized in descending order. To read about "g's" unfolding cardiac story and his unsuspecting fate as an ultrarunner, scroll to the bottom of this page: 2004: The Story Behind "g's" Cardiac Stent

So, there you have it. An unfolding and evolving history of explorations in "g"-running. Stay tuned as G-WeB's answer to backpacking & cross-training continues with...
