2007 Race the Train
North Creek, NY
(8/10/07)

Finishers who "beat the train" had finisher medals with yellow ribbon... like, our RTBer...
Jim Grandy!

Nestled in the Adirondacks (NY), Team-C and "g" headed to North Creek for the 2007 Race the Train, 8.7 mile trail race. Long Shots and J.Grandy met them there. It was a beautiful, sunny and cool morning. J.Grandy was getting in shape for a marathon and the upcoming Reach the Beach 200 Mile Relay Race. Long Shots (AKA Tenacious L) was running with (allegedly) some what of a slower pace due to a hip problem. "g" was coming off a disappointingly slow Wakely Ultra and was sporting some Achilles tendon soreness.

Runners and spectators boarded the old fashioned train and headed off to the start line at 7:30 AM. Once there, they departed and readied for the 9:00 AM toot of the train whistle to start the race. For the runners, they began on a bridge over looking the Hudson River; the first leg of the race was a 1.6 mile hill. Spectators boarded the train and took a leisurely ride to the finish line - stopping along the way to cheer for runners.

Of course... J.Grandy (ol' Speedy Legs) finished just before the train's arrival and was awarded a yellow ribbon sporting his finisher's medal. "g" ran his butt off and sprinted to the finish line for a personal best. He was filled to the brim with gloating pride because he had finally beat his running nemesis (Tenacious L)! Injured and 66 years old... HaHaHa! It didn't matter! HaHa! HaHa! He had left Long Shots in the proverbial dust! This was the best day of his life! "g" bragged to himself, "He's probably still hoofing up that first 2-mile hill!"

Then... reality sunk in... moments after "g" crossed the finish line... like, 36 seconds later... Tenacious L. cruised into the finisher's chute "Damn!" thought "g", "This isn't a victory at all! He's not injured and he's probably not even 66 years old! He essentially... beat me again! How does he do it? He's not even breathing hard!
No wonder they call him... Tenacious L!"

Editor's Note: "g" later learned that Long Shots would have finished about 4-minutes earlier if he hadn't stopped along the trail to rescue a runner who had accidentally made a wrong turn on the race course.

"Hackle.Hackle."
Thought"g" as he ran along side Long Shots,
"this guy's toast! HaHa!
Finally!"

Mean while... back at the start line and train station...
Team C boarded the train for a wonderful ride to the finish line
in an open-air car. The views are just what she needed: relaxing.

Long Shots
(AKA Tenacious L)
zips across the finish line seconds after "g"... hardly breaking a sweat!

"g": Can I trade for your finisher's ribbon and medal?

J.Grandy: Only if you can
catch me! HaHaHaHa!
Like, that will ever happen!

"g" concedes to Tenacious L,
"I can't believe you tricked me into
believing I had beat
you! Damn!"

Editor's Note:
T.L. loves playing with the young guy's head!
