2007 Daily Training Schedule

Lake Placid Marathon

After running my first 50-mile race in '06 (JFK 50M), my goal for 2007 was to run a 50 Mile Hat Trick. Depending on what I learned, I would develop a training schedule for my first 100 mile race in '08 (presumably, the VT 100 in July).

I learned a lot from my efforts to run longer distances "back to back". First of all... I now know I need 2-3 months between ultra races. After running the Finger Lakes 50M on 7/30/07 and then the Damn, Wakely Dam Ultra (33M) three weeks later... I hit the wall at mile-26. I ran the Wakely in 9+ hours compared to my 8:12 time the previous year.

Then, two months after the Wakely, I ran the VT 50 and felt great! In fact, I ran the first 33 miles in 6:40... an amazing time compared to my two years of running the same distance in the Wakely.

Five weeks after the VT 50M I ran the Stone Cat Ale 50M. Again, I ran out of steam. This time I hit the wall sooner - during the 2nd of 4 trail loops. (I only completed the marathon course.)

Although I didn't meet my goal to run a 50M Hat Trick in 2007, I did run three 50-Mile races in 12 months (JFK 50M in 11/06, Finger Lakes 50M in 6/07, and VT 50M in 9/07). Overall, I'm significantly more knowledgeable about my 54 year old body in the context of how to train for ultras. Consequently, I believe I'll be ready to rock in '08 and complete my first 100M!

2007 has been a wonderful ultra experience...
I'm ready for 2008!
