The Damn, Wakely Dam is an incredible experience. John and I fast-packed the course 3 months before running the race last year. For folks new to this course, I'd suggest purchasing the Northville-Placid Hiking Trail guide book. It breaks down the leg of the hiking trail used by the Wakely into sections that make it difficult to get lost.

Again, I also found that using my Katadyn Personal Water PURIFICATION (not a filter) System (coupled with my modified bottle harness) was time efficient (e.g., dunk and go), weight efficient (only carried one bottle of water), and perfect for this course because of the many water sources along the trail. Others had to bend over, pump and filter water... other's used purification tablets and 2 bottles. Again, I used S-Caps (1-2 each hour) for my salt replacement and Power Bar gels.(2-4 per hour) for carbohydrate replacement.

What I learned about my own personal experiment: running a a 50 mile trail race 3 weeks before a 33 mile trail race was a bit much for me at this stage of my ultra running/training. By Mile 26 my legs were toast. Anywho... it's a great race and I'd do it again!
