Excerpts from the 2006 Damn, Wakely Dam Ultra web site (http://www.wakelydam.com/index.html):

What's It All About?

The Damn, Wakely Dam Ultra [7/22/06] is an extreme trail run through the vast Adirondack Park Wilderness of New York along an uninterrupted section of the Northville Placid Trial between Piseco Lake and Wakely Dam.  There are no cross roads.  There are no aid stations. Runners must be prepared to complete the entire 32.6 miles (52.5K) of rugged technical trail unassisted.  It's just you, the trail and the company of like-minded runners.

If you end up spending the night and are ambulatory, please try to make it to the finish as soon as possible to avoid an unnecessary search.

Due to the remote location and difficult access, there will be no emergency or medical personnel on the trail and cell phone reception is not available.  If you are alone and become ill or injured and cannot make it out… help could be a long time coming.

(It's time. Please sit. Fasten your chin strap and tighten your seat belt.)

"g" read the Wakely home page and knew he was goin' ultra! His craving for a chocolate smothered ultra in the middle of gosh-knows-where was titillated by the Wakely. "I want to run the Wakely! I want to be a Wakely Outlaw too!", became his new running mantra.

(We at G-WeB suggest you visit the Wakely web site to appreciate, or worry about, "g's" latest obsession - http://www.wakelydam.com/index.html; get the whole Wakely-outlaw-thing by checking-out the 2005 Results!)

Running an ultra had been perculating with "g" like the perfect storm. At the close of his Marathon Hat Trick in 2005, he'd already been reading, Running through the Wall - Personal Encounters With the Ultramarathon, by Neal Jamison, and CHIRunning, by Danny Dreyer. But when Marathon Jeannie poked "g" in the perverbial running eye with the UltraRunning Online web site link, he bled with sweaty enthusiasm and immediately subscribed to UltraRunning Magazine, and purchased an UltraRunning T-shirt and A Step Beyond: A Definitive Guide to Ultra Running, edited by Don Allison.

Running Wakely was not "g's" idea. The seed was paradoxically planted one December afternoon via cell phone chat with Fast John ("I don't know "g", it's a pretty hard run.") The Wakely had been one of Fast John's must-dos because of it's extreme nature, and because he'd never run an ultra. Once "g" got the bug to be a Wakely Outlaw, Fast John X-ed out the weekend on his calendar. They were both gunnin' to be... Wakely Outlaws!
