Can you Say, Ahwatukee 5K?
(4-04)
Slammin Sarah and her dad scootch under 27:00 beating her Personal Best by 2+ minutes.

With "a" scheduled to dive into the coral reefs off the coast of Belize for her school's spring break, and her Mom heading down to New Jersey for a 5-day conference, Slammin Sarah wondered what she would be doing on her spring break. "Wonder no more," offered her dad, "You and I are going to Phoenix!"

Uncle Rob and Aunt Jeannie and their kids, and Grandma and Grandpa L., lived outside Phoenix. With anticipated 80-degree weather, some hiking, a few wings, and a little training at Uncle Rob's fitness center... Slammin Sarah and her dad would cap-off their trip by racing in the Ahwatukee (Aw-a-tookee) Foothills YMCA Spring 5K. "Oh, cool," thought Sarah, "more stupid running."

Prior to their arrival, Grandma and Grandpa had meticulously spent weeks scouting out the location of the Ahwatukee Foothills YMCA in preparation for a timely race-pack pickup the night before the race. They didn't want any glitches on their watch! Grandpa would often say things like, "Ruth, I'm going out for some ice cream," but would actually do a drive-by 35 miles away just to make sure the "Y" hadn't moved. No sir-ee Bob! No glitches or mishaps when Grandpa Mike's on duty!

Upon their arrival, Sarah and Gary basked at the pool where Grandma and Grandpa LaBella live. When not relaxing, they could be found at the HUGE LifeTime Fitness Club swimming in one of their two Olympic sized pools and hanger-bay like rooms filled with either aerobic or weight machines.
After consulting with Aunt Jeannie about a good, hard working, heart thumping hike to make Sarah and her dad 5K-ready, they decided on Hole in the Rock. Sarah's dad loaded up his new Camelback hydration pack with 3-liters of water, Uncle Rob loaded up on Zone Bars and nuts... and off they went. Oops... not so quick bucko! The entire length of the trail can be viewed above, as Uncle Rob looks at the trailhead sign with "hole in the rock" overhead. Through the "hole" behind Sarah, the Phoenix Zoo is visible. So... after a pleasant 15 minute walk in the desert... they hiked back to the car and visited the zoo!
