Lake Waramaug Ultra
The 100M Litmus Test
(April 20th, 2008 / New Preston, CT)

"g" (r.) at the 0630
early start:
What the heck am I doing?

This was the test. The Lake Waramaug 100K litmus test. After completing his first 100K "g" would then decide whether or not to honor his 100-Mile Commitment and run his first 100-miler in July (Vermont Endurance Run). After all, "g" figured... if he could run 62 miles, he could surely run an additional 38 to complete a 100-miler... right?

On this trip, "g" had a pacer to bring him home the last 15 miles. Riding shotgun on this trip was Paddle-Jammer - a tenacious sports legend in Malta, NY. Between marathoning, canoeing his brains out in the Adirondack Classic Canoe Race, and extreme bungee jumping... P-J was the perfect compliment to "g's" running/pacer needs.

There were 80+ runners - 7 were running the 100K. There was an initial out and back 4.5 mi loop followed by 7 laps around Lake Waramaug (7.6 m), and a final out and back 5 mi loop to the finish line. The weather was an overcast, cool 40-degree temperature. By mid afternoon, the temps reached about 60 degrees with plenty of sun. The aide stations were stocked with great volunteers and munchies, although "g's" favorite was the middle one (half way around the lake) with it's Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup!

After the hugest plate of mashed potatoes, grilled chicken and a brewski for "g", and the most sumptuous turkey sub for P-J, the Boys with sole nestled down for the night at a cozy New England inn in New Milford - about 30 minutes south of the Start Line at Lake Waramaug.

With "g's" 0630 early start, the Boys were up at 0430 and at the park by 0600.

Early morning views of Lake Waramaug from the Start Line. What's the best thing about an early start? There's no one at the port-a-pottys!

After the first out-and-back baby loop, "g" cruised across the
Finish Line after completing his 1st of 7 (7.6M) laps around the lake. Things were lookin' real good!
