Part 8: Campsites Along the WCT
Night #3: Cribs Creek

AXE and "g" almost resorted to fisticuffs as the Boys debated and plotted their schedule for hiking on Day-3. At issue was the idea of trying to dine-out at the only two (rumored) restaurants on the WCT without jeopardizing their hiking-miles-per-day schedule. First, there was the restaurant (finally know as Carl's) at the Nitinat Lake water crossing (33 Km marker) that boasted the possibility of fresh sea food. Secondly, there was the curious rumor of Chey Monique's (44 Km marker) and her infamous hamburgers (which they were advised to order well done). It was definite they would arrive mid day at the ferry crossing and Carl's for lunch... but, it was unlikely they could coordinate their daily hiking-per-mile needs with then eating dinner at Chey Monique's!

They were on a schedule. AXE insisted that trying to dine at Chey Monique's for dinner on the same day they had lunch at Carl's would required an unrealistic extra number of miles to hike on Day-4. No matter how they tried, dining at both restaurants either on one or two days would kick the Boys off their miles-per-day hiking schedule for catching the (only) 1600 hour WCT bus to Victoria at the end of their hike on Day-6. Chey Monique's would not fit into their schedule. Everyone was bummed!

Then... some passer-bys offered a new variable into the Boy's hiking timetable. Chey Monique's might be open for breakfast! THAT COULD WORK. Cool. Very cool! Breakfast at Chey Moniques on Day-4!

...and then there was Carls:
After some shouting across Nitinat Lake, Carl mozzied over in his boat to carry the Boys and the 4-Canadians to his dock and the trail heading south. There was only mild mention of "a restaurant" at the "ferry crossing" in the WCT guide book... but Carls was a dream come true in the middle of Nirvana! At 11:30 AM, the Boys had a choice of fresh indigenous crab or freshly caught king salmon steak (either served with baked potato for $10). There were coolers of $5 beers and $2 sodas, chips, etc... in the middle of no-where! To say the least, the Boys chowed down lunch and headed out just before 10 hikers heading north-bound arrived.

Not all of the cedar trail was in good condition!

Cribs Creek:
This was a big day. 13 miles, Carls and what initially seemed to be a very disappointing campsite. No creek to bathe in and a log strewn battleground to contend with. "g" was the first to spot a minor dip in the skimpy creek which was barely deep and big enough to cover his tired (naked) body. As the water trickled over him and out to the ocean, from behind a series of privacy boulders came the 4-Canadians, "You know... there's a huge swimming hole over there (pointing) the size of 5 Olympic swimming pools!"

So... there was more naked swimming, penne alfredo with cured ham and fresh herb bread for dinner, and plenty of time to hang out!

...and then....
attack of the baby sea lion!
