Part 6:
Chef DeBoot Blister's
Evolving and Sumptuous Dinner Fare
5-Day Menu and Checklist for Rocky Mt. Natl. Park (8-03)

Oooh-la-la! Dinners in Colorado will be bearly-delicious! In addition to DeBoot's sumptuous fare, two of the Adirondack's own Iron (Stomach) Chefs are scheduled to prepare two of the 4 meals for the trip. Having already made his spicy debut at Heart Lake last autumn, Iron (Stomach) Chef Joezeppie will prepare a mildly spicy chicken curry and basmatti rice entree. Entering the competition... er... backcountry kitchen... is the returning Iron (Stomach) Chef Jimeppie... this time preparing a perfectly aged and creamy cheese and macaroni dish cradled in mini ham patties. The J-eppie Brothers look forward to demonstrating their backcountry culinary skills in Colorado. (Hmmm.)

Despite the tireless efforts of this year's backcountry culinary icons to prepare tantalizing meals from dehydrated dust, it's sufficient to say that even the best laid plans for backcountry fine dining can turn offly ugly. Never the less, G-WeB is proud to present (disaster-destined or not) Chef DeBoot Blister's (evolving) Dinner Fare for the Boys when they hike Rocky Mt. Natl. Park.

Some final tips:

1) The more days you hike, the hungrier you will be for complex carbohydrates. This translates into more food needed at the end of the trip versus the beginning. Packing food for a 5-day trip requires a little more thought then a 3-day trip.

2) Powdered drinks (like, Gatorade, hot chocolate) are very heavy. Bring only what you will use!

3) Power bars (Cliff Bars are my favorite) are also heavy. However, they give the body what it needs! Read the labels carefully. Each brand offers a different balance of carbohydrates, protein, etc. Bring only what you will need, plus a tad more for emergencies.

4) Always bring a small stash of emergency food. Ramon Noodles are light, can be soaked in cold water if you have no stove, and are filling.

5) Check out the carbohydrate link for preparing your food list.

Food safety. To hang your food properly you will need the following gear:

/
Black nylon bag w/ loops at both ends
/
2-small carabiners to clip to both ends of the food bag for hanging

/
50 ft. black parachute cord to hang food
2/7
Bear Proof Food Canister: The canister may stay home as backcountry camp sites have food poles.
