DAY Two: Sunday
Filled to the brim with BBQ spareribs, medicinal beverages, and a grateful
feeling because it had not rained... the Boys
headed off to bed. "g",
eager to get complete statistics for a field test of his down bag... set
the alarm on his Suunto for 0400 hours to check the ambient temperature
in his tent and compare it to his sense of comfort. Getting an
accurate/subjective comfort rating of his bag at what ever the lowest
temperature might be was crucial for determining if the bag was a keeper.
Over the course of the night, it was a wonder "g"
slept at all. He tried every features of the bag... on his back, on each
side, with and without the hood pulled tightly around his head, etc. When
morning arrived, he concluded, "I love this bag!"
Wake-up arrived at 0700 sharp. AXE
made sure the Boys would get an early
start if they were to climb Mt. Marcy - NY's tallest peak. They were all
eagerly anticipating breakfast to jump start their day!
"g" moseyed out of his
tent. AXE offered a cautious inquiry
of him, "Did you take the bag with breakfast? Do you have it in your
tent?"
"Oh yea," "g"
responded satirically, "I got up early... pulled down our three food
bags from the bear cables, rummaged through them searching for breakfast,
and then ran back to my tent before you got up at 0600... just to hide
breakfast?"
OK. There was no breakfast... but, there would be. The role of
head chef includes (only) a zillion potential setbacks... including the
time in the Grand Canyon when"g"
(responsible for cooking dinners) thought he left the (only) matches home.
Anywho, there was plenty of breakfast food. There was a container of oatmeal
cookies, fruit (2-apples), breakfast meat (leftover pepperoni),
OJ and left over Italian bread which Jim
and AXE toasted over their one-burner
stove using a fork.
Sunday was beautiful. Got to Paint a Picture
Jim and I'm Not Going to Carry your
35-Pound Canvas Tent George day hiked to check-out Mt.Colden's
slide of 1-year ago and to view the 15-foot wall of debris the rangers
cut through to open the trail to Avalanche Lake and beyond. AXE
and "g" climbed Mt.
Marcy. The day concluded with heading back to the SUV around 1600 hours,
a quick shower for "g" at
the LOJ, and then off to Purdy's in Keene for some home made cookin'!
