Final Pack Weigh-In: Part 2
Food-Checklist for a 5-Day Trip to Grand Teton National Park

The Boys and their food problems. That's a whole other story! There's the time High Altitude Joe brought 2 canned hams for dinner and no can opener. How 'bout in the Canyon when Gotta Have A Lighter Pack Larry brought fixin's for packaged augratin potatoes and he hadn't read the directions ahead of time? Yep... no milk or butter. (And, all of those canned vegetables he added to the potato roux!) Then in the White Mts., after having precariously drained 3-lbs. of cooked pasta in the micro-slit between the pot and its lid, "g" then dropped the whole damn thing enroute to the Knee's makeshift serving table. And, how can we forget Whiskey Tottin' and "g's" encounter with a bear in the High Peak Region. The bear totally enjoyed all of their food! Oh... the stories are endless.

It's enough to say that even the best laid plans for preserving and cooking your meals can turn offly hungry. But, that's where G-WeB picks up. The following is the evolving Food Check-Off List that "g" plans to use for his trip to the Tetons with the Boys. We hope this insight helps you to pack for a similar trip.

Some final tips:

1) The more days you hike, the hungrier you will be for carbohydrates. This translates into more food needed at the end of the trip versus the beginning. Packing food for a 5-day trip requires a little more thought then a 3-day trip.

2) Powdered drinks (like, Gatorade, hot chocolate) are very heavy. Bring only what you will use!

3) Power bars (Cliff Bars are my favorite) are also heavy. However, they give the body what it needs! Read the labels carefully. Each brand offers a different balance of carbohydrates, protein, etc. Bring only what you will need, plus a tad more for emergencies.

4) Always bring a small stash of emergency food. Ramon Noodles are light, can be soaked in cold water if you have no stove, and are filling.

5) Check out the carbohydrate link for preparing your food list.

Food safety. To hang your food properly you will need the following gear:

/
Black nylon bag w/ loops at both ends
/
2-small carabiners to clip to both ends of the food bag for hanging

/
150 ft. black parachute cord to hang food
/
